About Artist
Robert Montgomery
There are artists whose livers are public as there work There stories told in grand expositions and glossy books, but then there are those that prefer the shadows whose art talks for them. I was given my first camera, a Kodak Instamatic 100, by my grandmother in the late 60’s after some time I moved on to a Fujica Compact 35. After leaving high school in 69 I found a job as a darkroom assistant, which entailed keeping the floor clean, photo paper and chemicals storage and mixing by hand photo chemicals in batches of 5 gallons at a time. It was the best time of my life as all the darkroom staff were ex RAAF or Army photography technicians. I was taught to use processes that are no longer used, 35mm monochrome film and 9 inch x 9 inch x 250 feet long film processing, glass plate negatives, ortho film reversal. I left the industry and started a new life in the travel business but I found myself drafting back to photography when asked to do inhouse advertising photography, at the same time I was asked by others to help with weddings and social events.
