Tentacle Tornado

The cold Atlantic waters off Cape Town are rich in plankton, often causing blooms and poor visibility. On this day, clearer water allowed a photo hinting at the scale of this never-before-photographed box jellyfish aggregation—one of several columns, with dense masses filling the gaps below.

About Artist

Geo Cloete

Geo Cloete is a Cape Town-based photographer and artist whose work celebrates the beauty and diversity of the natural world. A lifelong passion for the ocean and photography eventually led him to combine the two through underwater photography. Although the underwater world remains his greatest passion, his curiosity increasingly takes him beyond the shoreline, photographing birds, wildlife and landscapes throughout Southern Africa and further afield. With a background in architecture and an artistic approach shaped by working across several creative disciplines, Geo brings a strong sense of composition, form and visual storytelling to his photography. His dedication to the craft has earned him numerous prestigious national and international awards, while his work has been exhibited around the world, including in solo exhibitions. At the heart of his photography is a desire to capture the essence of a moment — those fleeting encounters that reveal something of the character and beauty of the natural world. By sharing these moments and the remarkable places in which they occur, he hopes to inspire a greater appreciation for nature. In recognition of his contribution to raising awareness of marine conservation through his photography, Geo became a Mission Blue partner in 2016.
